Garden 2019 Spring Update

THE TIME HAS COME- Garden 2019 is well underway. We’ve had so much rain in the few weeks since I took these photographs the garden looks totally different now. This post will be filled with what we’ve been up to this Spring! We’re always trying new things and testing out different things. We never, ever, claim to be professional gardeners- just hobbyist.

What was really exciting this year was our asparagus bed was in its 3rd year. Which means it’s usually ready to harvest for the first time! Around the middle of April, before we even cleared off the leaves, we noticed the asparagus poking up! Just eating it raw after we cut it was the best asparagus we’ve ever tasted. The patience of waiting 3 years was totally worth it! We had to really force ourselves to not eat it all standing in the kitchen right after we brought it in.

As you know we start most of our plants indoors in late Feb/early March. This year Brett got, even MORE, grow lights and boy did our plants take off. I was comparing photos from the same weekend we planted from the year before and this year’s starters were at least 3 times the size.

This year we are growing

  • Tomatoes (Black Cherry, Atomic Cherry, Beefsteak, and Lucid Gem)
  • Eggplant (NY eggplant, Florida Market, and Antigua)
  • Shishito Peppers
  • Jalapeños
  • Bell Peppers
  • Sweet White Corn
  • Peas & Beans (3 kinds)
  • Cucumbers (3 kinds)
  • Arugula
  • Leeks
  • Carrots (2 kinds)
  • Onions (White, Red, and Yellow)
  • Zucchini
  • Basil
  • Cilantro
  • Dill
  • Parsley
  • Tarragon
  • Sage
  • Oregano

That humidity got Brett’s hair like…

So another little/big surprise we had is that we decided to expand the garden out a couple feet, then once we got the tiller we decided to just level out the giant dirt pile we had from digging up the garden 2 years prior that extended it quite a bit more…

Where the bean teepee once was (and the small brick foundation) we planted our cucumbers this year. Last year the vines outgrew my trellis so fast they ended up just all over our fence and in our neighbor’s yard. They didn’t complain but this year we are pulling out the big guns. We’ve since picked up some 16-foot cattle fencing to make a large arbor entrance into our garden that the cucumbers can grow up! I can’t wait to get it up and share pictures in my next update.

There is so much garden this year even I got down in the dirt. Brett placed everything out where he wanted it this year and I provided the labor.

Like I said- since I took these photos about 4 weeks ago the garden has really grown. We’ve since staked the tomatoes, got our cattle fencing and trellis’ up and plan to do A LOT of weeding and laying down some pine shavings this weekend. Make sure to follow along on my Instagram (@cheeseandweim)! I’m always posting snippets of updates in my stories- in fact, I have a story highlight dedicated JUST to the garden this year. So check it out!IMG_5343
